For the sake of it, I've used numbers here but I'm not really ranking one model over another - I'm kind of just putting a lot of pretty together on one page. Because I can. I also just realised that this is kind of my grunge dream...I'm listening to Alice In Chains' Unplugged session and imagining lots of grungey-haired boys (such as the ones below) and girls running through carparks...
1. Andrej Pejic.
Highly androgynous, the Bosnian born model fled to a Serbian refugee camp before moving to Australia at age eight where he was later scouted. The stories of his scouting present Pejic as discovered variously in a McDonald's, a swimming pool and a corn field. Either which way, his life was to change dramatically and he was whisked off to Paris. Pejic has modelled for many of the big names in the fashion world which has embraced his highly unique look with open arms and a huge desire to book him for their shows and campaigns. He has modelled both men and women's clothing and walked for both Gaultier's male and female lines in 2011. That same year he was ranked among FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World, a move that was criticised so thoroughly he was later removed from the list for its insensitivity to gender identity issues.
I adore Pejic's look, he's just so
beautiful. There's really no other word for it. I also like what his career is doing for promoting open mindedness and opening up a forum for discussion of gender and modern dealings with the word. I love me some androgyny and I love long-haired male models - as this list will display. Pejic is a highly unique, interesting and label-defying model.
On a side-note, it's depressing that someone under a month older than me is changing the fashion world while I just peep in at it and hope to be let in some day...
2. Paul Boche.
German model Paul Boche is ranked 50 in the World's Top Fifty Male Models and is another example of my being a sucker for long hair, blue eyes and a girly mouth. The list of shows that he has walked for is pretty impressive; Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Paul Smith, Gaultier, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Prada and YSL - to name only some. The print side of things is equally impressive and the boy sure knows how to move. He doesn't rely on being pretty which is quite nice.
3. Miles McMillan.
Number 29 in the world rankings, the American model has not only a fantastic name but has worked for some other great names; Topman, Edun, Etro, Paul and Joe, Paul Smith, Hilfiger, Cavalli, Dior, 3.1 Phillip Lim and more. He has featured in magazines like Love and Vogue Hommes International. A painter by trade, he sites Bacon and Freud as inspirations and, though very interested in modelling and fashion, does not take it too seriously.
4. Lowell Tautchin.
Kenzo, Paul Smith, Galliano, Missoni, Cavalli, Bottega Veneta...and that's only a portion of this year alone. Number 16 in the rankings, this Canadian model is signed to seven different agencies across the world and works with great regularity. Tautchin is a fun, interesting model who has fun with his job and yet needed to be scouted twice in order to be convinced to take up a career in modelling. The shortest hair of the bunch, Tautchin makes up for it by being impossibly cute.
5. Erik Andersson.
Labelled by some as the new Andrej Pejic, the Swedish Andersson is number fourty in the world's rankings. Similarly beautiful, Andersson is, however, a deal more overtly masculine in appearance. He is androgynous but not so much that he could pass as easily for a woman. He is also a more quirky beauty - less perfect symmetry, more interesting angles. Andersson has fronted a Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign with Alice Dellal and walked for the likes of Topman, Lanvin, Ann Demeulemeester and 3.1 Phillip Lim. He has also appeared in industry leading magazines such as Vogue Italia and Love.
