Instagram for December.

ig

Instagram and I have become good friends this Christmas. Here's just a taste of what I've been 'gramming this month and the kind of things you can expect from me in the future. Mostly it shows my awful consumerism and random artsy shots...heh... x

Outfit/Food post.

Pictures from yesterday that didn't get posted as I didn't want to interrupt the metallic flow I had going. Here's my lunch (yes, I'm being one of those people) because it was crazy good value at just under a tenner for all of this ramen and a Tiger beer and because it and the Oscar de la Renta dress that I found for a fiver brightened a not so great day. Yay for food and fashion!

I awoke to another surprisingly beautiful day in Dublin and had not packed for such weather. I ditched my tights but this vintage black shift dress and my new silky bomber (à la "Drive") were unbearably warm as the boyf and I wandered around the city. Thankfully we headed back to his family home where good food and lovelier treatment awaited. I'm not really a guest anymore after five years but everyone's still uber-nice to me. And they feed me so well! Kind of a trend in my life - I befriend good cooks and people who like to make me tea. Pear and Apple Tart AND Plum and Apple Crumble in one day...Dear God, I just realised how much I talk about food in this blog nowadays...he's made me as obsessed with food as he is!

Anyhoo, spent a lovely day on their lovely patio (made beautiful by his mother but, as an organic farmer, it only makes sense that she has a green thumb) surrounded by family, friends, a slew of animals, flowers and fantastic food. Sometimes you just sit back and realise how lucky you are in life.

Being Cool.

Spent the day hanging with one of my oldest and most stylish of friends, Bev. For a day of chilling, Inbetweeners binging, avoiding my Granny's random grumpiness and assing around the house, I needed comfort and slouchy mixed with a touch of fashion. This River Island shirt was purposefully bought over-size so I could wear it as a dress if I so wished but is worn here with Alexander Wang-esque shorts from Topshop underneath for my modesty's sake. Have to give the shirt and the Office runners props for making my legs look so uber-long here! My hair was not behaving so I added this hairband from Topshop to tame it. Not a huge hairband fan (there's something a little childish about them) but I really like this one and the studs complimented the sporty-grunge feel of the outfit. And the sunglasses? What did they bring to the table? (Geddit?) They were just because I'm cool.

We are family.

Damn, am I pooped. Mornings have never been my friend and bad sleeping habits, and the fact that I've been finding it especially difficult to sleep recently, meant that getting up this morning was horrendous. The stormy skies overhead seemed a portend of pathetic fallacy but, as it turns out, a great day was had by all. My siblings, Mammy and I were scouting out suits and dresses, shoes etc for their debs. Awww, they're growing up so fast! We, as a clan, however, are notorious shoppers. Seriously, if there was one, we'd be on the Olympic team.

I'm exhausted from the trekking! But, plus side to going with the fam is that there is no skimping on fine food, snacks, tea or taxis when I would have normally trudged through the rain. Got some awesome shorts in the Topshop sale (despite my ban on buying anything for myself) and had many a bant with the sibs. James and I like to try on hats together and below is one of the more fetching creations that he gave a whirl. We also made quite a stir on the Luas as we were all tired and slightly hysterical at that point - gotta love when you make Mammy snort with laughter.

Practicality was word of the day as there was much walking and lots of rain but it was quite warm; ergo, layers, light knits and runners. I love this tee from Urban Outfitters despite a co-worker of my dad's saying, "It seems something has attacked you!" How droll. As the basis for the outfit it set up a palate of neutral tones - olives, browns, beige, denim and black - and gave me inspiration for a more urban twist on knits.

Being a stylish little brother and making me proud!

Shorts worth breaking promises to myself for!

Grown-up goth.

Like most sub-cultures, goth makes me think of youth. I was never super into the music but I've always adored the beauty of the fashion. Few genres of music inspire the same level of dedication and creativity through clothes. A lot of my teens were spent flirting with goth and punk fashion. However, though I don't feel (at twenty) that I'm old, I do feel I'm too old for some of the things I used to wear. Very few people don't look ridiculous in these clothes beyond their teens. It's just a little too literal, a little juvenile. Not true for everyone, of course, as there are those people who dedicate themselves and their lives so completely to genres, make them a way of life, that you cannot help but nod appreciatively. For those of us who aren't quite so epic, we have to learn how to, not lose who we were, but integrate that into becoming an adult. That means being a little less obvious, a little less costumey. Looking like an Anne Rice character is cute when you're fifteen but not when you're going for job interviews. But you don't want to lose yourself to being age appropriate. How to balance it? Do a Booth and only let your personality shine through socks and ties? Or maybe we can just learn to think about things in more abstract ways. Fashion houses are great educators of this idea. Retain that punk or goth aesthetic through a colour palate, materials or hints of sub-culture that are included in unexpected ways. What I'm wearing today isn't even a particularly subtle example of this; We have a largely black palate with some red thrown in for colour, use of lace and sheers, a crucifix and cameo. Worn differently, all these elements would be too much, too literal but here they are tamed by the simple wardrobe staple, the classic black skinny (which transcends every age group), by inversion of typical goth silhouette and layering. The goth silhouette is usually baggy on bottom and tight on top; as when poofy little skirts or longer flowy ones are paired with corsets. Here, I'm wearing tight pants with loose, baggy layers on top. I have layered a kimono-like jacket over a Peter Pan collared shirt over a corset-inspired tank. This adds depth to the outfit, layers of interest and layers of influence; Japanese fashion, sweeter, preppy trends and more stereotypical gothic clothing. The hair and makeup (or lack thereof) is pretty casual and neutral, again, not giving in to the obvious or costume by slicking on some black lipstick.

See, the thing is, as adults we're so much more than one genre. We've experienced so much more and moved on from the hurt and pain and general shittyness of being stuck in the ether (and secondary school) and we no longer need to hide behind our music. When we're adults that music, life-shattering, altering and bettering as it may have been, is just one part of the many things that make us unique. It's no longer everything about us. So, when I make my goth a little more grown-up and try to age gracefully, I'm not forgetting my past but I'm letting it fit in better with my present and my future x

Mash-up.

Random outfit again. I'm kind of all over the place at the moment so I guess it just reflects that...I got up disastrously late yet again which made me feel like an absolute disgrace. However, then I spent the day with Mam which was kind of really nice. We went clothes shopping, then sweet shopping and finally makeup shopping. The search for pink hair-dye failed miserably, it's impossibly difficult to find good quality colours that don't occur naturally. Guess my hair will have to remain sans dip-dye for now.

Trousers are for dignity.

From day two of the Cavan trip. Jeans with a dress so I didn't have to compromise my dignity when climbing things! Thanks to Sarah D for taking these! I really like the layering of a sweater dress over a shirt dress and that the colours and materials make this outfit kinda goth-geek chic.
