SS15 - The Looks I'll be rocking.

Working in the industry, I do keep an eye on trends - you kind of have to stay informed. But I don't take them as gospel. I like to put my own spin on things, to dress for my lifestyle, to accentuate the things I like and minimise the things about myself I'm less fond of, to avoid trends I just really don't like. This is something everyone should try and do, in my opinion. Because there is nothing worse than someone who tries to shoehorn themselves into clothes that really don't work or that make them uncomfortable.

So, once again, I'm talking the trends or interpretations of trends that will be inspiring how I'll be dressing this season.

Fresh Flares:

I didn't think I liked flares. And then I reconsidered. Mad patterns and colour are never going to be my thing but a contemporary re-imagining is just the thing. They're super-flattering and balance out curvier figures. With a cute turtle neck knit, you get a seventies vibe with a much more sophisticated finish. Same applies for crop tops and little band tees for warmer weather.

Classic Rock:

Hedi's sexy vision of a hyper rock and roll seventies, is another variation of this trend that I can get behind. Gimme my moto, black skinnies and a massive hat any day. It's easy, endlessly cool and timeless. These pieces are investments and go with everything so you don't need to feel guilty spending a little bit more.

Purity:

This isn't real a particular trend for the SS15 season but rather a current through fashion in the past few years - a move towards simplicity, minimalism. A little normcore. But seriously easy to wear, requiring little to be done in the way of hair and make-up and very pretty. 

New Denim:

Denim is a staple, a classic. There isn't really a season that goes by where it's not on trend. However, there's a particular emphasis on it at the moment. I'm loving the slightly kookier and newer interpretations. Think smock dresses, shirtdresses, tees etc. Denim everything, please.

Hedi over heels yet again...

Controversial as his leadership of (Yves) Saint Laurent has been to some, there's no denying that he takes a good photo and has a talent for spotting melancholic, moody beauties. Black and white, against simple backdrops and without any real fan-fare and, yet, captivating. An immediately discernible aesthetic. I, for one, am a major fan of what he's doing for that grand house. I think infusing it with youth and the energy of artists and musicians does fantastic things for everyone involved and I think few could fuse rock and roll and luxury so seamlessly, in a manner that miraculously doesn't seem contrived. The politics of access and revolution or invention are a debate for another place and head space because tonight all I want to do is adoringly gaze over the latest images for the Psych Rock collection in awe. Boho's never been my thing...but damn am I starting to wonder if there's an old school rock and roll hippy in me yet.

So, here I am in double leather with a floppy, classic rock and roll hat. I'm majorly feeling the Hedi Slimane vibes.

Don't worry, Hedi - I love ya.

He seems to get a lot of bad press - and not just from the press neither. And, while I understand that everyone must have their critics I cannot help but feel defensive of someone who takes the word "collab" to the next level.

I mean, whatta list of names! Beck, Courtney Love, Sky Ferreira, Kim Gordon, Christopher Owens...Wait a sec...that sounds familiar. Oh, yeah, it sounds like my c.d. collection.

But seriously, getting iconic musicians to style themselves in a combination of current and archive campaigns? Genius.

Saint Laurent Pre.

It's fun and rock and roll, flirty and young. Plus, I always love when pre shots are as aesthetically pleasing as the clothes pictured. Oh, and Sky Ferreira is modelling.

Beck and Edie Campbell as new faces of Saint Laurent.

Hedi doing it again. Loving the use of a rockstar/hot young thing combo - I mean, yeah, it's a little expected but c'mon...Beck and Edie Campbell in the one campaign? That's the stuff of fevered, drug-addled dreams. And now it's a reality. The execution of the past two collections has really surprised me in the most wonderful of ways. The whole haute rock'n'roll thing could have been unbelievably trite but these clothes are wantable, covetable and decidedly cool.

Saint Laurent - Yves + Christopher Owens

So maybe he left the band to pursue a modelling career? 

Ex-frontman of Girls, Owens lounges around in beautiful settings and wonderfully composed black and white photography, largely without a shirt, for the newly relabelled label's A/W 2012-S/S 2013 / "Heralding of a new era" campaign. It's not the first instance of Saint Laurent without the Yves but it is quite a new direction for the brand. The campaign is really sexy and quite grungey (I'm loathe to say 'rock and roll') yet remains undeniably chic. This is a very modern Saint Laurent, this is the house moving towards a future, towards a younger clientèle. 

It's all very voyeuristic; it seems as if we are looking in on a couple in private, but without any note of seediness. Nescher, as the female lead in this scene, stares back at us wilfully, unflinching. It is she who meets our eyes and (largely) not Owens. Both are equally bare. There is a wonderful sense that this is more of a gaze for a new generation and not a traditionally gendered gaze. 

It's broody and moody - images that are darkly romantic - images you want to live inside. And I love it for several reasons: 1. I'm a sucker for musicians 2. I love that Owens tattoos become like an extension of the collection and its look 3. The introductory video uses a song (Just a Song) by his former band and I love them 4. The photography is just plain pretty.

Let's see where Slimane continues to take things!
