I've been playing around with my Instagram lately to make something more interesting and visually cohesive and engaging, which led to my doing blocks of colour. While this is limiting and a pain in the butt sometimes, it challenged me, got my creative juices flowing again and I shot the bulk of my favourite images of the year in the past few weeks. I particularly hit my stride with the images I recently shot in black and white and, somehow, started to dress in the same way I was picturing things. This invariably meant I ended up with lots of cool and striking outfit shots and self-portraits that I didn't have anything to do with as I don't like flooding my Instagram with just images of myself.
Ergo, this black and white lookbook with outfit photos as well as images I drew inspiration from at the time. Think minimal colour, silhouettes, graphics and prints doing the talking, sleek, boyish vibes and a mixture of references from Christian Slater in Heathers to hiphop meets goth.

Lost In Summer
I have a bit of a thing for Western vibes though I loathe Westerns themselves - perhaps due to a childhood of being forced to watch them with my dad.
I guess it's a Hemingway-esque honesty thing. The materials are basic - cottons, denims, hides - and pure in a way. Ornamentation tends to be minimal and, even if it's not actually true, you get a sense that cowboy inspired clothes are made for doing things. And I do love me some menswear inspired pieces.
It's probably also the shoots that go with them. All stark, romantic landscapes. Barren bar one perfectly styled figure.
All of which being the reason why Penneys' latest lookbook had me immediately hooked. I do love a concept that relies purely on the context and setting. Also, the clothes just look amazing - especially for the price points. You gotta give them props, this shoot looks all kinds of perfect.
Bonus: this context is a great way to breathe fresh life into the whole boho, seventies thing that's everywhere at the moment. It was getting rather twee and overdone for a moment there but this is just rugged enough to refresh the palate. Delightful.

COS AW15 Menswear
I finally remembered to drop the COS AW15 lookbook into my godmother this weekend. She and I are both big fans and have begun to exclusively buy each other gift cards at holidays and birthdays. Now that I get to go to press previews, I always give her a peek at what to expect. We kinda bond over it. But when I was giving her the lookbook, it gave me pause to have another flick through.
And I remembered how awesome the menswear lookbook was.
So slick.
Not mad on some of the styling - no matter how cool you are, it's hard to pull off sliders + socks - but the overall theme is so on point. I love the Japanese influence, the folded v-necklines, the minimal tailoring. The silhouettes hug the body but don't adhere to it; flattering, slimming, streamlining.
There's a touch of normcore and nineties but enough of that Scandinavian cool to pull it all together and make it fresher, something new.
I'll definitely be borrowing from the boys with this one. Shop in whatever section you please, I do.

HIGH SS15
Upon discovering HIGH last season, I instantly fell deeply and utterly in love - with the clothes, the styling, the overall aesthetic, the lookbook, the Icelandic location, the models' faces, the photography and videography...everything. I wanted to disappear into the world conjured by the AW14 collection. A world of being vaguely overdressed, dreamy and a touch melancholic.
The SS15 collection from the Italian-based, British-designed label did not disappoint in the wake of my passionate feelings for last season. Still that gorgeous videography, still those two wonderful models and still that moodiness but transported to a different, though equally lonely landscape (Bardenas Reales in Navarre, Spain). All pools in empty backyards and stretching desert in the distance. Proclaiming themselves "everyday couture", we can see this reflected in the casual clothes made richer and more interesting by expensive detail. A balance of restraint trimmed in lace or crochet or chains. Think breezy, wearable, beautiful clothes. Think denims and cottons, white floaty materials, camo pants, light coats. Touches, again of the cowgirl vibes of last season and contrasting modes of elegant lounging at the house with rugged, distressed looks for exploring the harsh, lovely terrain.
Below is the campaign video. I could watch it all day, it's so gorgeous. Majorly digging the crisp lines of modernity against the craggy wilderness of nature.

Spring 2015 Looks
At the start of the AW season, I did a wee post where I put together some examples of the types of looks I was feeling for the season. I liked how that turned out so I thought I'd do another for Spring 2015 - especially as for most of Spring around my neck of the woods (Ireland) there's a lot of awkward in-between season dressing where the weather is still frightfully cold and miserable. Partly inspired by actual trends, partly inspired by my life and infused with my own twist on things - there's a touch of Saint Laurent SS15 and seventies vibes, there's an outfit inspired by how my mother used to dress me as a kid and another all-white number that comes from my love for Danielle Romeril SS15 and what Cos showed in their preview for next season.
